Kate MacLean

Occupational Therapist / Explore Therapy Director

Kia ora, I’m Kate, a Paediatric Occupational Therapist based in New Zealand. I’m passionate about helping children and teens feel seen, understood, and confident in who they are.

My journey into OT began when I moved to the United Kingdom at 18 to volunteer at a centre for children with diverse needs. That experience sparked a deep love for working with young people and led me to train as an OT. Since then, I’ve worked across New Zealand, Australia and the UK in homes, kindergartens, schools and specialist settings, supporting children to thrive in the places they live and learn.

I work with children and young people of all ages and developmental profiles, including those with sensory differences, emotional regulation challenges, motor delays and mental health needs. I take a neurodiversity-affirming approach, always aiming to support the child’s authentic self and meet them where they’re at. My practice is informed by ongoing learning in areas such as interoception, trauma-informed care and respectful, relationship-based support.

Therapy with me is never one-size-fits-all. It’s playful, practical and centred around your child’s goals and strengths. Whether we’re working on big emotions, body awareness or everyday tasks, I make sure sessions are engaging and tailored to what matters most to your whānau.

Explore Therapy was created to bring support directly to the child, helping them in the environment where they’re struggling, whether that’s at home, school, kindy or online. I also offer online resources and courses so families can access helpful tools and strategies wherever they are.

Outside of work, you’ll find me at the beach, walking, doing yoga or spending time with my friends, whānau and loved ones.
