At Explore Therapy, we focus on what’s going right. Supporting your child to build on their strengths, grow their confidence, and reach the goals that matter most to them and your whānau.

We work with children and young people up to 18 years old, taking the time to understand why something might feel hard and what supports could make it easier.

Our Occupational Therapists have specialist knowledge in child development and neurodiversity, allowing us to tailor our approach to suit your child’s unique sensory, emotional, and developmental profile.

Through fun, interest-based activities such as movement games and hands-on challenges, we support the development of:

  • Emotional regulation

  • Fine and gross motor skills

  • Play and social interactions

  • Self-care and life skills

Every session is shaped around your child’s needs, interests, and pace, creating an environment where they feel safe, seen, and supported.

Getting Started
We begin with a phone consultation to chat through your concerns and hopes. This helps us identify focus areas and plan your child’s initial assessment.

At Explore Therapy, we offer both play-based observations and formal assessments to better understand your child’s development, strengths, and any challenges they may be experiencing in daily life.

These assessments help guide support in areas such as:

  • Fine and gross motor coordination

  • Primitive reflexes

  • Emotional regulation and sensory processing

  • Visual perception and handwriting

  • Daily routines like dressing, eating, and participating at school or kindergarten.

Formal assessments we may use include:

  • M-FUN (Miller Function and Participation Scales): Assesses how motor skills impact participation in home and school routines

  • BOT-2 (Bruininks-Oseretsky Test of Motor Proficiency): Evaluates motor coordination, balance, strength, and precision

  • DVTP-3 (Developmental Test of Visual Perception): Assesses how visual information is processed for learning and motor tasks

  • Sensory Profile: Gathers information on how your child responds to sensory input across different settings

These tools can help identify conditions such as:

  • Dyspraxia (developmental coordination disorder)

  • Dysgraphia (handwriting and visual-motor challenges)

  • Sensory processing differences

  • Motor planning and coordination delays

We always combine assessment results with information from you, your child, and their educators to create a support plan that’s practical, strengths-based, and tailored to real-life needs.

Group Programs at Explore Therapy
Our group sessions are playful, supportive, and affirming. We believe children learn best when they feel safe to be themselves and sometimes, being alongside others who just get it. It is the most powerful therapy of all.

Group therapy offers a space for children to connect, practise new skills in real time, and build a sense of belonging. We tailor our groups to suit the ages, needs, and goals of those attending. Always with a focus on building confidence, connection, and capability.

Group options include:
Social Connection Groups

Girls Club
A strengths-based space to explore life skills, self-care routines, emotional literacy, friendships, and building a positive sense of identity.

School Readiness Groups
Preparing children for the transition to school through games and routines that support social confidence, emotional regulation, motor skills, and participation in classroom-style activities like group snack time and pretend bell times.

Proprioceptive Motor Planning (PMP) Groups

Feeding Therapy at Explore:
Our feeding therapy program supports children with feeding differences in a way that is respectful, playful, and guided by their sensory and developmental needs.

We understand that eating is complex. For some children, mealtimes can feel overwhelming. Due to sensory sensitivities, anxiety, motor challenges, past experiences, or a combination of factors. At Explore Therapy, we create a safe and supportive environment where children can explore food at their own pace, without pressure or shame.

Using food-based play, sensory exploration, and relationship-building, we help children grow their confidence around food, build trust in their own bodies, and feel more comfortable trying new things. When they’re ready!

There is no “one-size-fits-all” approach. Every child’s program is adapted to suit their unique profile, interests, and goals.

What to Expect:
We recommend a 10–12 week commitment to allow for gradual progress and a strong therapeutic relationship. All food is included in the session cost.

Session Options:
30-minute session – $90.00 incl. GST
45-minute session – $130.00 incl. GST
60-minute session – $150.00 incl. GST
